Asking and giving age
Ask politely how old someone is, answer naturally — and master the cultural codes around age in France.
Age in French has two traps for English speakers: you USE « avoir » (not « être »), and the word « ans » is mandatory (« 25 », alone, is never enough). This lesson covers numbers to 100 and shows you how to ask the question depending on register.
💬 At a birthday party
Léa is celebrating her 30th. She's chatting with a friend of her brother she's never met.
Léa
Bonjour ! Moi, c'est Léa. Et toi ?
Tom
Salut Léa, moi c'est Tom. C'est ton anniversaire ?
Léa
Oui ! 30 ans aujourd'hui.
Tom
Joyeux anniversaire ! Moi j'ai 28 ans, je suis le copain de ton frère.
Léa
Ah d'accord ! Et tes parents, ils ont quel âge ?
Tom
Ma mère a 60 ans et mon père en a 65.
Léa
C'est l'âge de mes parents aussi !

Léa
Elle a 12 ans, elle est encore au collège.
« Avoir » + number + « ans »
In French, you HAVE an age — you don't BE it. The opposite of English. The word « ans » is mandatory; informal speech sometimes drops it but never on a DELF exam.
- I am twenty years old. (correct)
- How old are you? — I am thirty-two years old.
Asking age — 4 phrasings
From most informal to most formal.
